Follow Pre-Operative Instructions:

Your surgeon will provide you with specific pre-operative instructions to follow in the days leading up to your surgery. These instructions may include guidelines for fasting, medication management, and other preparatory measures. It's essential to adhere to these instructions carefully to minimize the risk of complications and ensure that you're in the best possible condition for surgery.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle:

Prioritize your health in the weeks leading up to your surgery by eating a nutritious diet, staying hydrated, and getting regular exercise. A healthy lifestyle can help optimize your body's ability to heal and recover after surgery. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as these habits can impair healing and increase the risk of complications.

Engage in exercise before surgery as able

Participating in a pre-surgical exercise program can help strengthen your muscles and improve your overall physical conditioning, enhance circulation and healing and reduce the risk of complications such as blood clots, reduce stress and anxiety, help you recover faster.  For more information see this article.

Communicate with Your Healthcare Team:

Open communication with your healthcare providers is key to a successful surgical experience. Be sure to inform them of any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies, or medications you're taking. Discuss any concerns or questions you may have about the procedure or recovery process, and work together to address them proactively.

Arrange for Support:

It's important to have a support system in place to assist you during your recovery period. Reach out to friends, family members, or caregivers who can help with transportation, household chores, and other tasks while you focus on healing. Having a strong support network can alleviate stress and facilitate a smoother recovery process.

Prepare Your Home:

Make necessary preparations at home to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for your recovery. Stock up on essential items such as medications, groceries, and household supplies.  Get clothing that will make it easier for you to dress around any range of movement limitations, braces or slings you will use after surgery.  Set up a designated recovery area with plenty of pillows, blankets, and entertainment options to keep you comfortable and occupied during your recovery.

Book your initial evaluation with one of doctors of physical therapy. Starting your rehabilitation at the right time is crucial in reducing your pain and restoring your function. Mobilization and gentle exercises help preventing complications such as blood clots, muscle stiffness, and joint contractures that can occur due to prolonged immobility after surgery.  Early physical therapy intervention sets the stage for optimal long-term outcomes by addressing functional deficits early in the recovery process.  Click here to set up your initial evaluation!
