Here are 5 habits you should quit now for better back health:

1. Sitting Hunched & Bad Posture

According to WebMD, sitting hunched can put a substantial amount of pressure on your lower back causing pain. A hunched position is also counter to the natural alignment of the back. Over time, bad posture can put a strain on your back and result in long-term problems.

It is recommended that if your job requires you to sit at a desk for long periods of time you move every half hour. Small stretches can help to realign your back and alleviate pressure.

2. Wrong Sleeping Position or Bad Mattress

Another common problem is sleeping in the wrong position or on a bad mattress. If you like sleeping on your back, you may want to consider changing positions. A lot of back problems are caused by your alignment being off, sleeping on your back places your spine in an unnatural position.

If you are uncomfortable sleeping in any other way, WebMD suggests placing a rolled towel or pillow below your legs to create better alignment. You may also want to consider whether your mattress is the problem. A mattress that is too soft will not give you the support you need, too firm and it may be uncomfortable.

3. Sitting Too Long

Sitting for prolonged periods can cause intense discomfort in your back. From just above your tailbone to all the way up your spine, sitting for too long can result in pain nearly anywhere. If you have to sit for your work, set a timer to get up every 30 minutes.

4. Not Exercising

Exercise is critical for nearly every aspect of your mental and physical well-being. What few people realize is how much not exercising can impact the health of your back. Strengthening your core can help give your back and spine the support it needs.

5. Doing Sit-Ups Wrong

Finally, even the most avid exerciser can inadvertently cause harm to their back. Doing sit-ups incorrectly is one of the most common culprits. A physical therapist can help you do exercises and stretches the right way so that you do not put additional strain on your spine.
